Can I get analog audio through an SPDIF cable from my laptop to my A/V receiver? - best stereo receiver for internet

I have my laptop to my A / V receiver via a SPDIF cable. All you have soundproofing on my stereo to hear speakers and Windows system sounds. I want to be able to listen to iTunes and Internet streaming audio. Is this possible? If yes, is an obvious step I miss? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
